Celebrating 20 years - Ed's Story

We are excited to celebrate 20 years in the Anchorage community! Thanks to our wonderful, enthusiastic and dedicated clients who have come to spend an hour or two (sometimes 12) with us throughout the week!

20 years ago, if you had asked us where we'd be now, I don't think anyone would have been able to predict all of the wonderful relationships we've had the amazing opportunity to build. The lasting structural changes are just a bonus when it comes to the community we share.

This week we would like to congratulate ED TOAL for being part of studio one for 17 years as a Rolfer and a Rolfer in our Anchorage community for over 20 years!

Some time in the summer of 2003 Paul Van Alstine came to see me for a series of Rolfing® sessions. I was still relatively new to Anchorage, having moved here a couple years before. I knew Paul as a casual acquaintance and fellow Rolfer and thought this would be a good chance to know him better. As it turned out, those sessions were my job interview for Studio One Pilates. The studio was generating more demand for Rolfing than Paul could deliver on his own so he invited me to join the fledgling family that was forming at the studio. I hadn't considered branching out from my private practice before then, but I liked Paul and thought it would be nice to be around another Rolfer on a regular basis. It was one of those simple choices that changes the course of a life. Prior to my time at Studio One I lived the life of a solitary practitioner. While the interaction with my clients was certainly fulfilling there was something subtle missing. As it turns out, being around people who share your vision of how we ought to be toward each other makes all the difference. At this point I probably take for granted that I am surrounded by colleagues and coworkers who understand what I am talking about and what I do for a living. It is a rare treat for someone in my line of work. I am realizing now how important it has been for me.

Over the years I have had the good fortune to meet and grow to know so many fantastic people through the studio that I can’t imagine what my life would have been like had Paul not invited me to come aboard. In particular it has been beyond rewarding to work with a population of clients that are far above average when it comes to body awareness and commitment to their own wellbeing. Again, a rare treat and blessing. Pilates and Rolfing structural integration are so naturally suited for each other that it was inevitable Studio One would give birth to an entirely new form. Paul and Ana, along with the rest of their talented instructors, have brought us VASIE Pilates with structural integration baked right in. I wonder how many Studio One regulars realize how good they have it. World class personal fitness and growth here in their back yard.

Lastly, I would like to mention another beautiful thing that I’m sure would be missing from my life if it wasn't for Studio One. Part of a Rolfer’s vocation is inspiring others to take up the work. Because of the dynamic environment at the studio I have had far above my share of clients go on to train as Rolfing practitioners. I’ve actually lost count. Several of those people have gone on to surpass my abilities and even become instructors at the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute. I can’t imagine anything more gratifying than being a part of someone’s journey into such a rewarding life’s work.

So thank you Studio One Pilates for giving me the gifts I have received. Right livelihood in the truest sense. Camaraderie. Friendship. My life is richer because of you.
